Pryor, Lincoln, Boozman Announce Funds for Arkansas Tech University

Washington – U.S. Senators Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor and Representative John Boozman (AR-03) today announced that Arkansas Tech University will receive a $75,000 grant through the U.S. Department of Education.  The grant will go to Arkansas Tech’s Department of Behavioral Science Rehabilitation Science program.

Projections are that state and federal vocational rehabilitation programs will continue to face a shortage of qualified rehabilitation personnel.  As current personnel begin to retire, the shortage will become more pronounced.  According to current projections, Arkansas and surrounding states are on the brink of a severe staffing shortage.

Funds from this grant will provide financial incentives to encourage students to enroll in programs leading to employment as qualified rehabilitation professionals.  The grant will increase the number of personnel by providing training that leads to a Bachelor of Arts in Rehabilitation Services (RS).

As the first four-year university in Arkansas to offer an undergraduate rehabilitation science program, Arkansas Tech has been a consistent leader in our state to provide prepared rehabilitation professionals,” said Lincoln.  “I am proud that Arkansas Tech is continuing to lead the way and help our state address this critical shortfall.”

“Arkansas Tech continues to raise the bar for professional growth and development throughout northwest Arkansas,” Pryor said. “This grant provides an excellent training opportunity for students interested in rehabilitation services and helps alleviate a shortage of well-qualified personnel.”

“I’m happy that Arkansas Tech is proactive in recruiting for individuals interested in rehabilitation science,” Boozman said.  “This is a great step for enticing students to enter the field of rehabilitation services so Arkansans can continue to have great care.”
